I had the pleasure of playing Courtney Allen in Martine Sainvil’s new play Indispensable as part of the Waldman Play Development Program with Resonance Ensemble. I really love Martine’s work and am so happy to have been a part of this process, and so grateful to have been digging into a project as we continue to make art through a pandemic. A lil’ blurb for you: Honor Washington is living the middle-class American dream but she is struggling with what that means for her identity and the growing obligations to her family. Indispensable is the story of a class divide that grows within a family as they face the barriers to bridging the racial wealth gap. My role, Courtney, is a co-worker of Honor’s…and yes…it got a little Karen. While I’d love to have shared this with everyone, it was an invitation only development process; but knowing Martine, this play will definitely see another life beyond zoom.
My Great-Grandmother used to say, “go buy yourself a hat, it’ll make you feel better”. Welp, not many occasions for new hats these days, but I’m trying some new ones on anyhow, at least metaphorically speaking… I’m very happy to say that I’ve started taking tv/film classes with MN Acting Studio. I’ve flirted with on-camera work before, but always found myself back on the boards of the stage. Since that is definitely not happening right now, I am very very grateful to have found a community on zoom with MN Studios to keep myself learning new tricks with the lens, grounding into acting and wouldn’t you know it…falling in love with the camera, even over zoom. I’ll be taking weekly with Amy Russ. Times are trying, but it feels really good to be creating and connecting right now. Stay tuned!
After donating several pieces I wrote to The Center Archive as a contribution to their LGBTQuarantine project, The Center connected with me to expand one of my works. I had the pleasure of voicing it myself, and Ernest Allen contributed their editing to compose a video. I also have a cameo in the piece from a personal video during lockdown.
Wow, times are wild and strange and scary, but somehow, someway, I booked my first commercial spot. I filmed it at home, improv definitely got me the spot and I am feeling really grateful for my self tape set up that converted my bedroom into a set, and a partner who was the best DP a gal could ask for.
I can’t share details, but I can share the above still. Stay safe out there kiddos. <3
Up next, I play Karla in Moses by Grace Connolly and Ronete Levenson. Directed by Blayze Teicher in association with HERE’s Summer Sublet Series Co-Op. This new play explores the question of how do we move through trauma? One day a homeless teen shows up in the home of two grown sisters (one of whom is my character, Karla). They form an unexpected family as they seek answers on how to make sense of a series of plagues. This subversion of the Moses story marries contemporary world events with ancient truths, primal wisdom, and the magic of prophecy.
Fri 8/16 at 7pm, Sat 8/17 at 2pm and 7pm, and Sun 8/18 at 2pm. Tickets are $20.
