Back to NYC
For the past, what was supposed to be about a month but turned into…eight months…my partner and I have been incredibly blessed (among other things) to stay with my Mom in Virginia. We packed up our apartments and put them into storage in October of 2020 and have been living and working remotely and providing culinary and emotional support to my incredible Mom, who is a nurse at an assisted living facility. We’ve been really grateful for this time with her, and for the refuge it has provided all of us. I’ve continued to take classes with MN Acting Studio, audition, booked a little, and have dipped my toe into Voice Over and Audiobook Narration. We’ve gotten a car (her name is Dolly) and we’ve driven her to the wilds of the Smokies in Tennessee to visit the Dolly Parton statue (our car’s namesake), to Savannah (my family and birthplace) and to Buffalo, NY (my partner’s family and birthplace). I’ve phone-banked and I’ve fixed things around my Mom’s house including a big over-the-oven microwave install, we’ve gardened, and hiked, and tie-dyed, and cooked (a lot), and we’ve done all we can to hold each other up and stay sane. We’ve gotten vaccinated, my Mom has gotten vaccinated, cases seem to be on the decline, and it’s time to go home. We’ll be headed back to NY for a June 1st move-in back in Astoria, Queens. New place, sort of new hood, same Astoria, same Queens. It’s bitter-sweet and there is a lot to process, and we are still decidedly in the middle of an absolute shit-show, but I’m excited for the next chapter and building a new home.
